I’m pleased and proud to share this page with beautiful pictures of this belgian abbey, and I hope it brings a moment of beauty and serenity.
Author Vincent VERSCHOORE :
Even if today there is a solar system populated by seven exoplanets called TRAPPIST and the beer with ammonia and liquid methane is reputed to be excellent, it is still in my native country that Trappist is most accessible, with a big one among the big ones: Orval.
Founded in the 11th century and destroyed during the French Revolution, Orval Abbey was rebuilt between 1926 and 1936 by monks from the Abbey of Sept-Fons, in Allier, itself raised from its post-war ashes. revolutionaries by a group of Cistercian and… Trappist monks in the middle of the 19th century.
Normal then that Orval Abbey takes up the Trappist tradition, which stopped at Sept-Fons in 1935. Today the ruins of the old abbey can be visited, the new abbey visible only from the outside. It includes a store offering the famous Orval as well as the cheeses of the same name: Val d'Or, the original name of the abbey based on the legend of Countess Mathilde, aunt of Godefroy de Bouillon whose lost gold ring would have been returned to him by a fish – hence the emblem of Orval with a fish holding a ring.
Here are some images from the visit to the ruins of this abbey.
