Innovafeed and McKinsey flood France, Belgium, the United States and Canada with insects
the choice is already no longer yours...
Since 2015, the McKinsey firm has been in charge of a global campaign to promote insect-based foods.
Through the prism of a company currently considered one of the most important French biotech companies, Innovafeed , they patiently diverted public attention and used fallacious arguments to achieve their ends.
According to the UN and the lobbyist McKinsey , supported by an army of disciplined and power-hungry soldiers, the choice is already no longer yours, even organic food distribution networks are starting to organize themselves to make you eat it... in complete discretion.
Innovafeed having refused the interview that we offered them to explain their approach in a transparent manner, since you have the right to know, I investigated to provide you with the clearest possible vision of the current situation.
It all started in 2016, when three young thirty-somethings, Clément Ray, Aude Guo and Bastien Oggeri, former members of the McKinsey firm and the Rothschild investment bank 1 , founded a biotechnology company specializing in the production and sale of black soldier flies. .
That is barely a year after the sprawling influence of the firm having galvanized French citizens for the presidential campaigns of Emmanuel Macron 2 , began to use its legion of networks to promote the development of this company nourishing the desire to make you swallow their flies.
Raising colossal funds very quickly with disconcerting ease, Innovafeed is following a formidable road plan to safely overcome the roadblocks that have driven the majority of players in the “edible” insect sector to bankruptcy.
In the space of a few years, no less than five hundred million euros will have been raised for the creation of ultra-technological centers, “cultivating” insects in a proportion never before achieved using Artificial Intelligence based on several thousand sensors per factory, controlling hundreds of robotic arms similar to the feeding robots imagined by the creators of the film Matrix . 3
Unquestionably making this “French Tech” the main insect production factory in the world.
Everything at Innovafeed has been designed to give a virtuous appearance to its approach, aligning with the logic of reducing carbon emissions and presenting itself as a model of good environmental awareness, by calling for a harmless circular economy.
Company represented by young people with a very friendly appearance, one of whose founders, born in China and raised in France, won the “French tech” entrepreneur prize by giving a face to the “parity pact” imagined by his government. 4
Offering both:
– an initiative seemingly primarily dedicated to feeding chicken, pig and fish farm animals;
– a “green” economic dynamic favored by the regions, supposed to promote employment;
– a carefully polished speech and broadcast by the media sparingly, taking care not to say too much…
Who would have thought that in recent years Innovafeed would tighten a grip of world domination going well beyond its apparent mission?
And yet, as you will see, the real danger of the flooding of markets with insect-based food does not come from the Vietnamese company cited in my previous article on the subject recently authorized by the EU , but rather dynamics and new contracts organized by Innovafeed .
However, to fully understand the impact it is necessary to take a quick look at the global context as well as the play of influences exerted by the McKinsey firm .
McKinsey and its management of Western democracies
Founded in 1926 by an American evangelist accountant giving his name to the firm, McKinsey “advises” and influences the world on the basis of Western development since the beginnings of the ultra-industrial era.
Today with one hundred and thirty offices spread across sixty-five countries, this firm which inspired the eponymous film — The Firm — employs more than forty thousand lawyers, statisticians, engineers and journalists to deploy its pawns by regulating the markets. 5
Strongly criticized during the Covid pandemic for her alarming role in the promotion of mRNA vaccines from Pfizer in France, in a few months she took the reins of the government and health authorities to ensure that as many citizens as possible are under the influence of these injections, the deadly ravages of which are no longer worth emphasizing. 6
But which I will not hesitate to return to in more detail in a future article.
Pocketing two million Euros per month, for his “advice” having poisoned entire populations and left so many families in mourning. 7
However, in addition to this worrying picture, brandishing at the first opportunity the banner of the risks of global warming to which it has largely contributed by supporting the largest oil groups in the world since the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914 8 , the McKinsey firm is today now the victim of an “internal rebellion” for having played a double game in favor of the main oil groups supposed to positively develop their activity by 2050.
More than a thousand of its employees signed a joint letter declaring, I quote:
“Our inaction and support regarding the Firm's clients' greenhouse gas emissions poses a serious risk to our reputation” but also “to our relationships with our clients.”
“For several years we have been telling the world to be bold and align with an emissions trajectory to reach 1.5°C; It’s high time we followed our own advice.” 9
Advice that it nevertheless has the nerve to pretend to follow, by organizing schemes designed to trap consumers in a process introducing different kinds of insects into their plates, snacks and other consumer products.
Although entomophagy has already been mostly rejected, several times over the last ten years, McKinsey continues to place its pawns on the chessboard.
With the help of its legendary influence with the “mainstream” media, but also and above all by using its flock as part of a long-term approach. Carefully gilding their image by putting funding, political assets and pseudo-ecological approaches on their side. Trying to pass off young sharks piloted by AI as nice idealists.
This is the case, above all, of Innovafeed , which the French government is pleased to count among its entrepreneurial elite.
Obtaining the B Corp certificate in November 2022 , allowing them to “officially” claim to be running a “business” in the service of the “forces of good”. 10
Phase 2 of Innovafeed
After patiently smoothing out its speech while avoiding going too far into human food, claiming to come to the rescue of breeders that it is in reality in the process of exterminating, Biotech Innovafeed is also attacking animal food. company and begins to supply the largest “agro-tech” for industrial food, producing products already available in your supermarkets. 11
Not content with the opening of the two largest insect farms in the world, Innovafeed has just joined forces with the industrialist ADM to open a new factory in the United States, in Illinois. 12
On the program is a wide range of pet food, while indirectly opening the market for ready meals which will contain the first oils and flours from “black soldier flies”. 13
Increasing current production that was initially disproportionate, by sixty thousand tons of proteins, twenty thousand tons of oils, as well as four hundred thousand tons of insect-based fertilizers per year.
Digitally waving its robotic tentacles over five-story growing trays, spreading over a total area of over ninety thousand square meters. 14
Intended, in addition to pets, livestock and fertilizers, for the production of energy bars and sports drinks as well as a range of new brands hatching like eggs.
A market which will reach one and a half billion dollars by the end of the year, created from scratch by McKinsey and the UN through the branches of the FAO and the WFP, the World Food Program, respectively led by Qu Dongyu, former Chinese Vice Minister of Agriculture, and Mrs. Cindy McCain, widow of Senator McCain and heiress to an agri-food dynasty, to reach the habits of nearly two billion individuals in 2023. 15
Not even counting the potential of the farmed animal market, which the president of Innovafeed estimates at forty-eight billion Euros per year.
However, since it is not yet easy for them to convince everyone, insect "dealers" do not hesitate to go through the most surprising economic niches, not seeming to be frightened by the slightest antinomy.
In any case, that's what Alexandra Kazaks, Doctor in the nutrition division of the American Institute of Food Technology, seems to think.
According to her, “a surprising number of vegans are already buying them”. 16
Other manufacturers are also trying to enter the organic aisles, like Entomo Farms , a Canadian structure offering different kinds of insect-based products such as snacks that do not suggest any presence of insect powder. crickets on the packaging, discreetly only indicating the presence of “organic cricket powder” in the composition of the product. 17
Paths that the French brand Avenia is trying to follow by inviting itself into Biocoops after having passed the milestone of muffins and desserts made from insects. 18 19
Or the Hi brand, to translate as “Hi”, already widely criticized for its desire to “make money above all”, which is trying to interfere in the cannabis industry with watered-down products requiring careful attention. special to be able to detect the presence of insect powder. 20
Innovafeed also wants to enter the organic market, albeit discreetly, first by conquering the German Naturland label by advocating for the first “guideline” dedicated to the breeding of organic insects. 21
At the same time joining the health market with the development of new drugs based on insects, as well as food supplements.
Phase 3 of Innovafeed
Why stop there since food for livestock, domestic animals and humans already seems a given?
The next turning point for Innovafeed is sewn with white thread.
In addition to dying from malnutrition, the food arms of the UN , the FAO and the WFP , building the dictatorial foundations of a new world food program, predict that in 2050 humanity will be more likely to die from microbial infections so many cancers... against which the only cure would be, as you can imagine, the bioengineering of insects.
In any case, this is what entomologists at the LOEWE insect biotechnology center , located in Giessen, Germany, predict. 22
For its part, with a new product launched a few months ago, “NovaGain”, Innovafeed is already interested in the health of farmed shrimp by formulating the first food supplement for animals intended for human consumption. 23
While “Agri-Tech” specialists in genetic biology such as FreezeM , are developing genetically modified black soldier flies to optimize yield, size and the ability to consume less to grow. This new species of mutant flies reaching two to three times the size of a normal fly has been named “BSF-Titan”.
Promising an opening of the soldier fly market as suspicious as it is worrying.
What will happen when these kinds of insects are forced to “escape” and reproduce in the wild?
This question hardly seems to concern Innovafeed , which from the start had all the cards in hand to avoid the pitfalls identified by McKinsey after more than a decade of failures of French, Belgian, Dutch, Israeli, Canadian and American insect farms.
Its main factory being located near the production of Tereos, the largest beet sugar producer in France, an agreement was probably planned upstream to feed the Biotech flies with the waste from their sugar production before the establishment of factory. 24
As well as its recent contract with Cargill , the international agriculture lobbyist having reached the highest levels of government.
Opening more and more doors towards hypermarkets and mass consumer products, by maintaining its partnerships with structures such as Labeyrie and Auchan . 25
Insects are arriving in supermarkets and organic products
Since 2013, the Crickeat brand has been available in Auchan hypermarkets in the south of France. 26
Followed in recent years by the Carrefour group and its Belgian and Dutch equivalents. 27
Concreting its good relations with Innovafeed by discreetly inserting into its shelves the first trout 28 , chickens 29 and pigs 30 fed with soldier black flies, Auchan , which is no longer in its first attempt, should soon move up a gear superior, but this time in the north of France.
However, although the approach is still timid, according to an anonymous source, everything suggests that the introduction of insect-based foods in organic stores and Biocoop is already under negotiation.
A troop of investors forming a new form of trust
How was a young company like Innovafeed able to become the first French tech unicorn by “disrupting” traditional agriculture and livestock farming in a few years?
Quite simply because in addition to the influence and services of McKinsey , it counts in its capital the majority of companies that have enabled it to achieve rapid development.
Do you remember ADM and Cargill , its last two biggest contracts? Well imagine that they are shareholders of Innovafeed . 31
And with them the giant Temasek , part of Singapore's sovereign funds, currently opening new offices in Paris after having set its sights on Brussels and London. 32
But also Futur French Champions , an investment fund from Qatar, and Grow Forward , the investment magnate in the Chicago agri-food sector.
A set of advantages widely introduced into the eating habits of Americans, but also of French and Europeans, ensuring that in the end the insect is indeed the most popular and least expensive protein for consumption in the future. . 33
Showing that the argument according to which insect-based food “cannot invade human consumption because it is too expensive” will soon be nothing more than a vague memory.
Yet it is so easy to move in the right direction and, before admitting that the environment and humanity are defeated by an uncertain future, to focus on the present development of organic agriculture, crafts, organic breeding linked to animal respect, and certain almost self-sufficient vegetable proteins, as, for example, proposed in the charter of the Résponds Bio store , having opened its doors the same year as Innovafeed without ever having been helped or financed otherwise only by the choice of its numerous subscribers, customers and readers. 34
Yours sincerely,
