A young schoolgirl from the Pyrénées-Orientales had a great initiative as part of a school project. Thanks to the support of a florist and her parents, she was able to carry out her project. She received praise from the town hall of her town of Saint-Estève and tens of thousands of Internet users.
Victoire Morel is only 12 years old but she already has great altruistic ideas and does not hesitate to put them into action. Her idea grew in her head after carrying out a mission at the PIJ (Youth Info Point) in Saint-Estève, her small town of 11,500 inhabitants located in the Pyrénées-Orientales.
This mission allowed her to help elderly people carry flowers to the cemetery. She then noticed that many of the graves were not decorated with flowers and felt empathy for “the people who died inside,” the young girl explained to France Bleu .
In college, when her teacher asked her class to carry out an eco-citizen project, Victoire proposed this idea: ask florists for their unsold items to decorate the graves and thus pay tribute to the deceased.
“A sparkling young girl”
Despite refusals and non-responses, the schoolgirl was not discouraged. It was ultimately the local florist who appreciated her “great idea” and accepted the request of this “sparkling young girl”.
“Victoire came to see us spontaneously with her mother,” remembers the florist to our colleagues at Actu Perpignan . “We gave her several buckets, with different flowers that were at the end of their life, and that we were going to throw away. »
The rest of the action took place on Sunday February 18. Accompanied by her dad, she went to the cemetery to offer flowers to visitors. “People didn't believe it was free! » says the young girl behind the initiative.
As there were flowers left after the distribution, the father-daughter duo did not hesitate to add flowers to other graves in order to restore color to the graves.
A viral initiative
Victoire's initiative was noticed by the City of Saint-Estève, which published a publication on February 20 to highlight the schoolgirl's “true generous and eco-citizen approach”. Internet users were touched by the altruism of the schoolgirl and the publication went viral, obtaining nearly 60,000 “likes”.
”Well done Victoire. So young, what kindness! Beautiful, generous soul of respect for our deceased… Thank you to you and to the people who helped you,” wrote an Internet user.
“Positive repercussions on other young people”
The father of the young Catalan girl, Jean-Baptiste, was pleasantly surprised by this enthusiasm. As a high school teacher, he appreciates the “plethora of comments which were very positive in terms of education” and anticipates “positive repercussions on other young people”.
Jean-Baptiste is obviously proud of his daughter: “She is very empathetic”. The duo is already planning to restart the operation to flower the cemetery again.
